Soothsayers have been an important and influential band for over two decades, releasing ten studio albums and an impressive catalogue of vinyl 7 and 10 inches, on their own Red Earth Records label as well as WahWah45s and Strut.

Performing at an impressive list of UK and international festivals, venues and theatres including Rototom Festival (Spain), WOMAD , The North Sea Jazz Festival, Dhaka World Music Festival, London Jazz Festival, Glastonbury, Barbados World Music Festival, and they continue to perform energising and dynamic live shows to a devoted fan base.

Thier reputation as a great live band and innovative studio producers has led to many successful collaborations with world class artists including Johnny Clarke, Cornel Campbell, Michael Prophet, Little Roy Mad Professor, Dennis Bovell, Earl 16 and Manasseh.

In 2019 Soothsayers’ Robin Hopcraft and Idris Rahman went to Sao Paolo to spend some time with bass player and Grammy-winning mix engineer Victor Rice, who assembled a group of incredible local musicians to record tracks for their album We Are Many (WahWah45s). A lot of great material was recorded, and a strong connection was forged with Victor and the other musicians, and it became clear that more than one album was being created. A few tracks from the same Sao Paolo session formed the basis of a separate instrumental album that blossomed into a full-blown affair during subsequent lockdowns, with Robin and Idris writing and recording new tracks and then directing over zoom from London whilst Bruno Barque recorded drums with Victor Rice on bass in Brazil and Joao Erbetta recorded guitar in his home studio in Portugal. The recordings were completed with London-based Soothsayers band members Andy Gibson and Kishon Khan. Despite the distances over which the album was created, the shared feeling of connection shines through in the music, and it never once feels that the music is anything other than a band in a room communicating, dancing and loving the music they’re creating. The album is called ‘Soothsayers Meets Victor Rice and Friends” and will be released on Red Earth Records on Oct 28th  2022

Straddling jazz, Afrobeat, conscious reggae and dub, South London’s Soothsayersis among the top ten must-see attractions on Britain’s club and festival circuit (on hold for the duration). Soothsayers can make the lame not merely walk, but dance. We Are Many is the band’s ninth studio album and it is a superbly well-realized production, up there with an earlier landmark, Tangled Roots . (Chris May -All About Jazz)
